Dental bonding involves building a tooth back up to the original form using a composite material that is bonded to the broken tooth. In many cases we can avoid drilling and cutting the tooth. The more a tooth is drilled or cut, the more likely there may be nerve damage. This can result in the tooth dying or tooth pain. The tooth would then require root canal treatment. If root canal treatment is unsuccessful the tooth may require extraction.
Crowns and veneers require the tooth to be drilled so that it can be shaped for the crown or veneer to fit. This increases the chances of the tooth needing root canal treatment in future. Since dental bonding involves no, or only very little drilling of the tooth, it is less likely of the tooth requiring root canal treatment at a later date. Hence a composite dental bonding repair is a much better option than a crown or veneer.
